Solid Rootz – East Arnhem Land, Australia
Supporting strong culture, strong community & strong futures
Solid Rootz is a grassroots, community-led organisation based in Milingimbi, a Yolŋu community in East Arnhem Land in Australia’s Northern Territory. Founded through local leadership and governed by community voices, Solid Rootz delivers culturally grounded programs that strengthen wellbeing, identity and opportunity for young people.
Its work is centred on Indigenous-led education through culture, community and connection to Country, where knowledge is shared through lived experience, Elders’ guidance and participation in everyday community life.
All programs are designed and delivered by community, for community, ensuring Yolŋu knowledge systems remain central to learning and development.
Community Context
Milingimbi is home to strong and enduring Yolŋu culture, with deep connections to land, sea and kinship systems maintained over thousands of years. At the same time, the community faces structural barriers including limited access to formal education, low school attendance and limited employment pathways for young people.
In this context, culturally grounded, community-led education models are essential – supporting young people to stay engaged, build identity and develop meaningful pathways for the future.
Cultural & Ecological Education Approach
Solid Rootz delivers a holistic model of education that integrates:
- Cultural knowledge transfer through Elders and homelands learning;
- Land and sea-based experiences connecting young people to Country;
- Creative and applied learning through arts, media and enterprise; and
- Health and wellbeing as a foundation for engagement and learning.
Learning is embedded across all activities – whether through cultural camps, storytelling, creative production or community initiatives – creating pathways that are relevant, engaging and culturally safe.

Youth Health & Cultural Wellbeing Program
The Weekly Refresh Program provides consistent, structured engagement through:
- Physical activity and wellbeing
- Nutrition and community cook-ups
- Social connection and mentorship
These sessions create safe environments where young people build positive routines, confidence and life skills.
Through Yindi Dhukarr cultural camps, young people travel to surrounding homelands to learn directly from Elders through:
- Cultural knowledge sharing
- Storytelling and mentoring
- Connection to land and sea Country
These experiences are central to strengthening identity, cultural continuity and intergenerational learning.
Looking forward, Solid Rootz’s vision is to expand its impact through establishment of a series of community spaces that offer opportunity for young people to connect, learn and express themselves through Yolŋu arts and culture.
